The plant possesses a thickened stem characteristic of the species, called a caudex. It blooms with large, deep red flowers that contrast with the glossy green foliage.

In commercial offerings, specimens 35–45 cm in height are most common. The variety is intended for use as a decorative indoor potted plant.
