The Egyptian onion is a hybrid of Allium cepa and Allium fistulosum. The plant forms tubular leaves and a floral scape, on which, instead of seeds, aerial bulbils develop, often arranged in several tiers. Propagation occurs vegetatively through division of the clump or by planting bulbils.
The crop is early-maturing and is one of the first to regrow in the spring period. The plant possesses high frost resistance and is capable of overwintering in open ground. The leaves are characterized by juiciness, tenderness, and a semi-sharp taste, though they may become coarser during the scape formation process.
The term "DOMAĆI" is used in the Balkan region as a collective name for local landraces and ecotypes of the Egyptian onion. The traits of such plants are not strictly fixed and may vary depending on the conditions of the specific locality where they have been traditionally grown.
