Variety description

The plant is a perennial herbaceous species 5–15 cm in height, sometimes up to 20 cm, with characteristic silvery pubescence. It was obtained via in vitro micropropagation from wild populations in the Apennines to replace the uncontrolled harvesting of wild plants.
The inflorescences are distinguished by a high content of essential oils, the main biologically active component of which is thujone. The profile of volatile compounds in the cultivated plants is identical to that of wild specimens.
The primary purpose is for use in the liquor industry for the production of the traditional “Génépi” liqueur. The plant is also used in folk medicine as a digestive aid and as a remedy for altitude sickness.
