The variety STÅL F was created through crossing. In agronomic publications, two possible genetic lines of parent forms are mentioned: the combination Ørn x Stjern (according to 1985 reports) and Sörbo x Bento (according to 1986 reports).

The variety underwent state trials in Denmark in the 1970s–1980s. During this period, it was included in lists of varieties participating in research on resistance to viral diseases, in particular, oat red leaf disease.
