The variety was obtained from two ecotypes: one originated from the Thames Valley, the other was collected on the slopes of the Andes. During the selection process, the initial plants were subjected to simulated grazing, after which the most suitable specimens were selected for crossing.
The plant is shorter compared to wild ecotypes but is characterized by increased leafiness. A high content of soluble sugars in the biomass determines the high nutritional value and attractiveness of the crop for livestock.
The primary purpose of the variety is its use as a forage crop for pasture improvement. The species as a whole is also valued for its rapid growth, which allows it to be used for erosion control and land restoration.
