The Pawnee variety is a vigorous tree reaching a height of 20–30 meters with a spreading crown. Fruits ripen early, usually in September. The nuts have an oily kernel and a thin shell that cracks easily.
The plant belongs to flowering type I (protandrous), so for effective fruiting, it requires the proximity of type II varieties. The variety shows relative cold hardiness, however, it is characterized by high susceptibility to scab and a tendency toward alternate bearing.
