In scientific literature, the Nero group is classified as a garden chrysanthemum used in mutagenesis research. This group includes such small-flowered semi-double forms as Red Nero and Bronze Nero.

The name Nero is also found in catalogs of other crops, including black chokeberry (Aronia × prunifolia), fig (Ficus carica) variety Brogiotto Nero, and kale (Borecole) variety Nero di Toscana.
