The Pacific Dawn variety is a hybrid of Cordyline australis x cordyline banksii and is referred to in a number of publications under the name Cordyline "Southern Splendour". The plant is an ornamental-foliage perennial possessing the appearance of a false palm.

It is important to note that the name Pacific Dawn also appears in garden catalogs for a Coprosma repens plant variety, which is an independent crop not related to this species of cordyline.
