Meló Groc d'Ontinyent belongs to the Inodorus-ibericus group and is a traditional local melon population known as Amarillo Groc. Due to its historical susceptibility to viral and fungal diseases, the variety is limited in commercial production and is currently undergoing classical breeding to restore and increase productivity.
The goal of current scientific work is to introduce resistance genes to viruses transmitted by aphids and whiteflies, as well as to fungal infections. The research aims to reduce the need for phytosanitary treatments while maintaining the original organoleptic characteristics of the fruit. Initial results show that improved lines exhibit more intensive vegetative growth.
