The variety was bred in the first half of the 20th century and was historically intended for open field cultivation. The fruits are characterized as large and slender, cylindrical or "vase-shaped". The neck of the fruit is usually absent, and the blossom end shape ranges from obtuse to zeppelin-shaped.
In the modern scientific community, the variety is used as a model organism in proteomics and metabolomics research and studies of phloem composition, as well as for the cultivation of root nematodes under laboratory conditions.
