The Ilan line is gynoecious, meaning the plants predominantly form female flowers. In scientific practice, the variety is used to study the genetics of sex, in particular the F locus that determines flowering type, as well as in experiments on virology and genetic engineering.

This line is not a commercial hybrid and is not intended for mass vegetable production. Information on economic characteristics, such as yield or fruit marketability, is absent from publications.
