Carbassa del ferro is a landrace variety maintained by local communities. The plant is characterized by powerful and vigorous growth. The fruits have orange flesh and are traditionally used in local cuisine for preparing stews.

Fruit weight usually varies from 10 to 50 kg, although specimens weighing more than 100 kg are encountered. This variety should not be confused with the industrial rootstock hybrid Ferro F1, which is used in vegetable growing to increase the resistance of grafted plants to diseases.
