The name Rabequet refers to a group of traditional local squash varieties. In botanical sources, there is uncertainty regarding the species: this name is applied to both Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita moschata, depending on the regional description.
The fruits have an elongated pear shape, resembling the rebec musical instrument, which is why they are often called violin squash. Specimens occur with a length of about 32 cm and a width of 12 cm. The skin is yellow or orange, and the surface can be smooth or slightly ribbed.
The plant is vining and is the result of long-term folk selection and adaptation to Mediterranean conditions. The fruits are characterized by a sweet taste and good keeping quality, and are traditionally used in cooking for making soups.
