ActiveCucurbita pepo L. · Field pumpkin
Mazeriev Iiap (Mazerreeuw Jaap)
10 August 2026
The plant is of the indeterminate type, characterized by a vining growth habit with long internodes and tendrils, resembling a pumpkin in its habitus. In the climatic conditions of the Canary Islands, the variety is capable of fruiting almost year-round, possessing a longer development cycle than modern hybrids.
The fruits vary in shape from round to cylindrical; the skin color can range from light green to dark green. The fruit surface is smooth, with pronounced ribs. The flesh is dense, non-fibrous, and changes color from white to yellow-orange upon ripening.
The variety is used in traditional Canarian cuisine and was also historically used in folk medicine and everyday life. Bubango is distinguished by high adaptability to local growing conditions, while not being the result of targeted breeding by commercial companies.
