The variety belongs to the 'standard' carnation type. Its key significance lies in its use as an object for fundamental genetic research and comparative genomics, in particular, for studying the mechanisms of flower doubleness formation and petal development regulation.

Morphologically, the variety differs from wild species by the presence of a large number of petals, caused by mutations in developmental genes. Physiologically, «Francesco» is sensitive to ethylene, which manifests as rapid wilting and curling of petals during plant aging.
