The AR601 strain is a microscopic endophyte that inhabits the tissues of the tall fescue variety «Jackal». As a result of seed inoculation with this strain, a symbiosis is formed, which is commercially known under the AVANEX brand.
The fungus produces alkaloids, including lolines and ergovaline. These substances make the grass stand less attractive to birds, such as Canada geese and gulls, and also provide plant protection against insect pests. The technology is used to establish turf at airfields, sports grounds, and in park areas.
The use of the AR601 endophyte additionally increases the grass's resistance to adverse abiotic factors, including drought and soil compaction.
