The plant has glossy oval leaves and reaches a height of 10–30 cm. Flowering is abundant, the flowers are small, predominantly of blue, purple or white shades, and feature contrasting yellow stamens.

The crop is light-loving but sensitive to direct sunlight, and is demanding in terms of maintaining substrate and air humidity. Varieties of the Royal group are characterized by a compact habit and high flowering intensity.
