The Avanta variety was bred in the Netherlands and introduced in 1990. In the 1990s, it underwent variety trials in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, where its characteristics were compared with standard varieties such as Elvira, Elsanta, and Bogota.

In scientific publications, the variety is mentioned in the context of research on the genetic resistance of strawberries to powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca macularis).
