Fr. chiloensis is an independent botanical species growing on the Pacific coast of the Americas. The plant reaches a height of 15–30 cm and possesses leathery dark green glossy leaves. The species is adapted to sandy soils and coastal environments, but has poor frost tolerance.
The fruits of wild forms are typically small, light red or whitish-pink in color with white flesh. In horticulture, the species is used as genetic material for developing new garden strawberry varieties, as well as an ornamental groundcover plant due to its low maintenance and evergreen foliage.
