The variety «Terra Regina» (often referred to in abbreviated form as «Regina») is widely used as a model object for studying flower development biology, molecular genetics, and pigment synthesis. Extensive libraries of genetic material have been created for this variety, and the plant transcriptome has also been studied.
Morphologically, the plant possesses a capitulum-type inflorescence consisting of marginal ligulate flowers, intermediate trans-flowers, and central disc flowers. The variety is used as a base for developing genetic transformation methods aimed at altering petal coloration and increasing resistance to powdery mildew and gray mold.
