The 509R line was developed at the Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute using in vitro methods. It serves as a male component in the creation of sunflower hybrids; in particular, it was used to obtain the Sevar hybrid by crossing with the 807A female line.
It is characterized as a branching form distinguished by high pollen productivity. The line possesses resistance to diseases and the parasitic weed broomrape (Orobanche), and also demonstrates excellent combining ability when creating new hybrid forms.
