The variety was obtained by the method of repeated individual selection on a severe field infection background of broomrape using directed cross-pollination and recurrent selection of full sibs. The initial material consisted of forms derived from the hybrid population Nadezhny × VNIIMK 80.
The plant belongs to the very early maturing group with a vegetation period duration of about 82 days. The variety is distinguished by high productivity; seed oil content is 52.0%.
Rodnik was used in breeding work as initial material for the development of other varieties, in particular, the Irtysh variety. It was also considered in the context of breeding confection-type sunflower.
