The V.Y.P. line is used for research purposes as a standard for testing the virulence of broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.) and assessing the resistance of other plant specimens. It possesses high susceptibility to all known races of this parasite.

For scientific purposes, the material is used for biochemical studies aimed at identifying allelopathic compounds. From the tissues of this line, scientists have isolated specific flavonoids and sesquiterpene lactones.
