The barley variety Elo was historically used in the brewing industry, particularly as a raw material for beer production. In a later period, the relevance of this purpose for the variety declined.
During breeding work, it was established that the variety possesses high susceptibility to the barley leaf stripe pathogen Pyrenophora graminea. The variety Elo was used as one of the parent components in the breeding of the Estonian barley varieties Viire and Leeni.
