The variety is a six-row winter form of barley. It was obtained by crossing the varieties Aviron and Carola.

In scientific research, Lonni is considered a promising donor of resistance to ramularia leaf spot (RLS). The variety has also been used in analyses of straw quality and genetic studies focused on grain crop yield characteristics.
