The variety is a hybrid obtained by crossing the Trollinger variety (Vitis vinifera) and the species Vitis riparia. The plant is characterized by intensive growth, good rooting ability, and high resistance to chlorosis. The inflorescences of the variety are functionally female.
Morphologically, the variety is distinguished by very large leaves with a characteristic bullate surface. Young shoots are colored an intense red-brown and are glabrous. The variety shows good compatibility with grape varieties prone to flower drop.
Despite its historical significance, the variety is not used as a rootstock in modern viticulture due to critical susceptibility to root and leaf phylloxera.
