The plant has a branched stem, white in cross-section. Basal leaves are broadly elliptical with a blunt tip and finely serrated edges, stem leaves are narrow-cordate, appressed to the stem. The root system is represented by a long, cylindrical, slightly branched root.
The flowering period occurs in July and August, inflorescences are large heads of ligulate and tubular flowers. The medicinal raw material is the root, which contains bitters, essential oil, and up to 44% inulin. Young roots have a violet aroma and a spicy-bitter taste; harvesting is carried out in the second year of vegetation.
