The plant is a herbaceous perennial forming dense clumps. It is characterized by distinctive stiff cylindrical dark green stems that are tightly twisted into a spiral. The stems are leafless, and plant height ranges from 45 to 100 cm.
The flowers are small, brownish-green, and gathered in loose inflorescences. The plant prefers constantly moist or waterlogged soils; it can grow in shallow water up to 10–20 cm deep or under regular abundant watering in pot culture.
The variety is characterized by high resistance to diseases, including Verticillium wilt. The plant is resistant to deer and rabbit damage, and it is evergreen in regions with mild winters.
