The Robin variety is an annual plant obtained by the negative selection method to eliminate excessively climbing forms. It has an upright growth habit with a twining stem. Characteristic features are the purple color of the flowers and pods, as well as a branched root system that enters into symbiosis with nodule bacteria. The pod contains from 2 to 8 small, round, black seeds.
The growing season is on average 150 days; seed harvesting occurs in August–September. The variety is drought-tolerant and practically resistant to diseases, however, it requires control of the bean weevil (Bruchidae). The plant is used as a grain legume crop with a high protein content and as a green manure for improving soil fertility.
The seeds of the variety are suitable for human consumption in boiled or fried form, as well as for flour production. The green pods are suitable for use as a vegetable crop.
