The variety belongs to the butterhead lettuce group and forms a small, loose head. The leaves are light green with reddish-brown speckling, and the inner leaves often have salmon-pink splashes.
The plant bolts quickly during hot periods, so spring or autumn sowing dates with 25x25 cm spacing are preferred. The variety shows high resistance to bacterial leaf spot.
Historically known as «Blutforellensalat». It is currently included in the Red List of endangered cultivated plants as a variety for biodiversity conservation and is used by breeders as a genetic resource.
