The plant is an annual and can reach a height of up to 2 meters, although growth is limited to 30–60 cm under certain conditions. Lathyrus tingitanus prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils. The plant is characterized by abundant flowering with red-pink or purple flowers.

The species possesses relative resistance, however, it can be affected by powdery mildew or aphids. The seeds and pods of the plant contain toxic substances and are not suitable for consumption. In cultivation, the species has been known since the end of the 17th century; its main purpose is vertical gardening and study as a green manure.
