The variety «Golden Oji», also known in the trade as «Gold Rush» (and formerly «Ogon»), is a deciduous conifer with a regular pyramidal crown shape. The tree grows more slowly than the wild species and reaches a height of about 10–15 meters.
The plant's young needles are colored a distinct golden-yellow, which changes to yellow-green by summer, and acquires a bronze-orange hue in autumn before dropping. To maintain color brightness, the variety requires sunny exposure, as the needles lose their golden color in full shade.
The plant possesses good wind resistance due to its deep root system. The variety is capable of growing in waterlogged areas and tolerates high soil moisture well.
