The plant is the result of accidental spontaneous hybridization and possible mutation between the species Papaver rhoeas and Papaver dubium. It is an annual herb 60–80 cm in height with smooth gray-green leaves.
Flowers with a diameter of 40–45 mm have a uniform black petal coloration. A standard flower consists of four petals; specimens with five or six occur less frequently. The flowering period falls between the end of March and June, with the petals of an individual flower typically falling within one day.
