The Evelina variety is the result of spontaneous hybridization between the species Papaver rhoeas and Papaver dubium. It is an annual herbaceous plant that was selected and stabilized during the breeding process to fix the trait of black flower coloration.
Plant height varies within the range of 60–80 cm. Leaves are smooth and glaucous-green. Flowers with a diameter of 40–45 mm usually have four petals, although specimens with five or six petals are frequently encountered. The flowering period occurs in the spring, from the end of March to June.
The plant belongs to decorative species of poppy and is not a variety of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). The variety is capable of germinating both in the autumn and at the end of winter.
