The Merkur variety is classified as a representative of the Pelargonium × hortorum species and is included in the group of compact varieties. In breeding practice, it is known as one of the subjects of the work of breeder Ingeborg Schumann.

In botanical and physiological studies, this variety was used to study plant adaptation under nitrogen deficiency conditions, as well as for the analysis of adventitious root formation and the growth of mother plants.
