The Ballotton ecotype is historically grown in the Belluno area and is considered a synonym of the Spagnolo ecotype. It is part of a group of varietal types cultivated in the Veneto region since the XVI century.
The seeds have an egg-shaped form and are distinguished by a moderately thin skin with a characteristic pattern of wine-red stripes. The product is used both fresh and dried.
Cultivation is carried out according to general IGP standards: plants are grown on supports with a planting density of 8–10 units per square meter. Due to the non-simultaneous maturation of the pods, harvesting is performed by hand.
