The Barbounia variety is a local Greek landrace, the name of which is associated with the characteristic striped coloring and shape of the pods, which resemble a red mullet fish. The variety is being studied in the context of genetic resource conservation in the Arcadia and Messenia regions.
The plant is represented by both bush and climbing forms. The variety is used for fresh consumption and also attracts the attention of researchers as a specimen in studies of resistance to tomato leaf curl virus.
