The FAIAL variety is a traditional local genetic resource collected in the agricultural systems of the island of Madeira. It is not a product of directed breeding, but rather a historically established landrace maintained by traditional agriculture.

Genetic analysis shows the variety belongs to the Andean gene pool. Scientific studies of the variety are focused on examining the nutrient composition of the seeds, including the content of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and iron, as well as on the characterization of morphological traits within genetic resource collections.
