The variety originates from the commune of Castelsardo. The name «Gioghedda» in the local dialect means «snail», which is presumably connected to the shape of the seeds. The plant is a product of folk selection and is included in official catalogs of genetic resources that are at risk of extinction.
The variety is used in traditional Sardinian cooking, in particular, as a component of dishes requiring long cooking times, such as miners' soups. Detailed agrotechnical characteristics, such as plant height, exact ripening times, and disease resistance, are not described in the literature.
