This variety is a local landrace adapted to the climatic conditions of the Pyrenees. It is registered in the Spanish Register of Commercial Varieties as a 'conservation variety' and is not the result of laboratory breeding.

The name Mantega means 'butter' in Catalan, which is a general term for a group of beans with a characteristic seed texture. The Catalan local ecotype should be distinguished from international research bean samples with similar names found in other regions of the world.
