The variety belongs to the green pea category and was bred by crossing the parental forms Karita and GPX9034-2. The variety underwent variety trials in the Pacific Northwest region of the USA.
During studies of field pea resistance to the nematode species Paratylenchus nanus, the Monarch variety was classified as moderately susceptible to this pathogen.
