The PBA Pearl variety is a semi-leafless, semi-dwarf field pea with an upright growth habit. The variety has high seed set and early maturity, and is suitable for pre-harvest desiccation. It is characterized by resistance to lodging, powdery mildew, and pea leaf roll virus, and has a low risk of bacterial blight infection. It produces medium to large white seeds.
The CDC Pearl variety is a high-yielding, medium-late maturing variety with small seeds, with a thousand kernel weight of 293 grams. This variety has intermediate resistance to ascochyta blight. Agricultural literature also contains references to other plants named Pearl, including ornamental varieties of perennial sweet pea, which are not intended for human consumption.
