Platycodon grandiflorus is a perennial ornamental and medicinal plant of the Campanulaceae family. The name Purple Star appears in lists of ornamental crops, however, detailed descriptions of this specific variety have not been found in open sources.

The plant reaches a height of 40–60 cm and has straight, thin stems. The flowers are distinguished by a star shape, and the buds resemble inflated balloons in appearance. The crop is perennial, overwinters in the ground in zones 3–10, prefers well-drained soils, and is sensitive to waterlogging.

The balloon flower is used in ornamental gardening, including the design of borders, mixed borders, and rock gardens, and is also used as a potted crop and for cut flowers. There is a possibility of confusion with varieties of the same name in other species, for example, Phlox.
