The variety was bred as a seedling of the "Schattenmorelle" cherry from open pollination. The tree and fruits are similar in their characteristics to the parent variety, however, the fruit juice may have a slightly higher acid content.
Nabella cherry fruits are used in cooking, in particular for making jams, pies, liqueurs, and juices.
