The plant reaches a height of 20 to 60 cm and has an erect stem with gray-green or green leaves 1–6 cm long. Solitary capitulum inflorescences 1–6 cm in diameter are located at the ends of the stems. They consist of dry papery bracts of white, pink, or crimson-red color with a yellow or black center.
The plant is adapted to arid conditions, prefers a sunny location and well-drained sandy soils. Flowering occurs 10–12 weeks after germination. The crop is resistant to light frosts and is valued in ornamental gardening for its ability to retain its shape and color for a long time after drying.
