The winter rye variety Locarno is mentioned in scientific publications as a hybrid form that participated in comparative field trials alongside other varieties. The variety was included in European agricultural plant registers.

Within the scope of research, this variety was used to evaluate grain and flour quality indicators, as well as in experiments studying the susceptibility of rye to infection by Claviceps purpurea.
