The variety is an herbaceous perennial with upright stems. A characteristic feature is its dark green leaves, which have a distinct purple-burgundy or crimson hue.
The plant is used in decorative gardening for flower beds, borders, as a solitary planting, and for cut flowers. The species is a hybrid of Silene banksia and Silene chalcedonica.
