The variety Burgess Improved Colossal Red is an indeterminate plant, about 1.2 m tall, with a medium maturity group. The fruits are flat-round, ribbed-heart-shaped, and bright red in color. Fruit weight is 300–500 g, reaching 1–1.2 kg with good care; cases of up to 1675 g have been recorded. The fruits are fleshy, low-juiciness, and intended for fresh consumption.
There are other varieties, such as Isbell’s Golden Colossal, introduced in 1910, which is distinguished by yellow fruits with a pink blush weighing 200–500 g. In English-language publications, the word colossal often serves only as a size characteristic for various tomato hybrids and varieties.
Due to the very large size of the fruits, plants of all Colossal types require mandatory tying and sturdy support to prevent stem damage. Suckering and plant training are also required.
The variety is listed in the national registry — its seeds are authorized for sale in this country.
