The variety is the result of breeding at the Smithfield Experimental Station. Its pedigree includes the varieties Blitz, High Crimson, SI 701, Starfire, Trimson, and Trent. The plant is of the determinate growth type, and the fruit ripening period is 63–69 days.

The variety was developed for professional vegetable farming and is well adapted to cultivation in northern regions. It possesses partial resistance to Verticillium wilt. At a certain point, it was withdrawn from general commercial sale and has since been maintained primarily by organic farming enthusiast communities.
