The Neptune variety was obtained by crossing a susceptible variety with the Hawaii 7997 line, which provided the plant with genetic resistance to bacterial wilt. The plant is capable of setting fruit at elevated air temperatures, which allows for its use in regions with unfavorable climates.

The fruits of the variety may be smaller compared to other tested tomatoes. The harvest is suitable both for fresh consumption, in particular for slicing, and for processing into sauces.
